Christian Dior was founded in 1946 in Paris by designer Christian Dior. After working for prominent couture houses in the interwar period, Dior launched his own label on Avenue Montaigne with financial backing from textile magnate Marcel Boussac.

In 1947, he unveiled his first collection, famously dubbed the “New Look” by the press. With its cinched waists, rounded shoulders, andfull skirts, the style marked a dramatic shift away from wartime austerity and reestablished Paris as the center of haute couture.
