Niki Yang: Indie Filmmaker, Voice Actor, Crab Killer

At our latest Frame Society meeting, we had the great pleasure of screening Niki Yang’s short film KILLING OF THE ALASKAN KING CRAB with Niki herself on hand for a Q&A.

In addition to being a filmmaker, Niki works as a storyboard artist, with stints on shows like Family Guy, Fanboy and Chum Chum, and Gravity Falls. She also does the voices of BMO and Lady Rainicorn in the popular cartoon Adventure Time.

Her film KOTAKC is a Lynch-ian exploration of heartbreak, centering on a young man whose recent break up causes a mysterious growth to appear on his chest. He quickly discovers that removing it may not be as easy or straightforward as it seems.

The subsequent Q&A with Niki shed light on her creative process and inspirations. Of particular note was her approach to making KOTAKC: she began with a single word or idea – such as ‘loss’ or ‘heartbreak’ – and proceeded from there. She tends to think of images first and feels as though the dialogue fills the spaces between.

Thanks again to Niki for taking the time out of her busy schedule for the full house at Frame Society and thanks to everyone who came out and made it a success!
